We Have a 1 Year Old

Well actually we have a 13 month old now but I still wanted to post pictures of our celebrations to mark the first year of our little babe.  The actual week of his birthday was CRAZY busy for us since his big day fell on the first day of our VBS (Vacation Bible School) and yours truly was the coordinator.  So since he really doesn't know any better, we kept things simple and had some homemade peach ice cream for a treat on the day of his birthday.  Then a few days later we celebrated with a barbeque at the beach with some friends.  It was a fun time.  The kids enjoyed playing and our little babe enjoyed eating--anything we'd give him.  The weather was cool, but not rainy so that classifies as a good day of weather.

The theme was farm animals since we completely enjoy having backyard chickens and our little babe knows exactly where to look out the window when we talk about them.  In fact, lately he likes to stand at our back sliding glass door and watch them roam and pecking at the ground.  It's so cute to watch when one walks up the steps and stands there eye to eye through the glass with him.
So farm animals needed a farm cake.  The cake was a healthy baby's first carrot cake recipe that I got a while ago from my old pal Tara.  It's a really interesting recipe that doesn't use butter or sugar.  The carrots are cooked and made into a puree to replace the butter and apple juice concentrate is used instead of sugar.  The result is a density more like carrot bread, but still very tasty.  Top it cream cheese frosting and who really cares what flavor the cake is?
But to give variety, I also made some chocolate cupcakes.
Don't you just love those plates and napkins?  I sure did.
Our little babe with one of his favorite people from church.  We are sad that Liz is back at Harding now, but we sure enjoyed getting to know her this summer.  She is such a cheerful and helpful young lady.  She came up to Juneau to work for the summer and have an "Alaskan Adventure" and in the process made a special place for herself in our hearts.
Due to my husbands line of work, things come up.  And unfortunately, something came up right before his shift was to end that he had no control over.  That translated into missing most of the party.  But again, since he was turning 1, the little babe didn't really notice.  He's always happy to see his daddy when he arrives no matter when it is.   So since the hour was getting late and most of the party goers already had to leave, we opted to save the main cake for the following day and just enjoy the cupcakes before we scurried on home.
Enjoying his mini carrot cupcake.

Bummed that it was all gone.  Boo-hoo!  I told you he enjoyed eating at his party.

So the next day, at our monthly potluck lunch with our church family, we let the little babe dig into his smash cake--the little red barn.  He dug right in and did not disappoint the group of onlookers he attracted.

A happy sibling pose!
"Hmm.  Looks like I got a little something on my hand."
Happy Birthday Sweet Boy!  We're so glad you've had a happy and healthy first year.

Happy Birthday.

Great looking cake.

Dad should tell the bears to behave so he can attend family functions.
