Chocolate Peanut Butter Birthday Cake

It's Tuesday, so it's time to get "tasty" again.  This week I wanted to share a cake I made for my niece's birthday.
We were really glad that our recent spring break trip to Oklahoma was able to coincide with her birthday. It's not every year that we're able to be with our nieces and nephew for their birthdays.  It worked out that the large family dinner get together to celebrate my nieces birthday had my sister-in-law searching for someone else to make the cake.  Naturally, I was happy to step up to the plate.  Almost immediately my niece and I sat down and brainstormed different cake and frosting combinations.  Shawn isn't a big fan of buttercream frosting so he was trying his best to talk her into picking a light whipped cream type frosting, but she could not be fooled.  We quickly narrowed in on a chocolate-peanut butter combination and we were both really happy with the results of the cake we dreamed up.  Actually, I think it's fair to say that everyone who came to the family party was happy with our results.
Our final product was chocolate cake, peanut butter frosting between the layers and on top, chocolate frosting for the edges and chopped peanut butter cups for the garnish.  Yum!
And not only did we dream up this cake together, but my niece and I made it together too.  That was definitely a treat for me.

Here's the recipes we used:

For the cake, we made the cake part of this recipe.  However, instead of dark cocoa powder, we used regular cocoa powder.
For the peanut butter frosting we used the frosting from this recipe.
And for the chocolate frosting, I believe we used this recipe.  I know it was one with cocoa powder and not chopped chocolate.  But you could use either type of recipe.

And then when I was uploading pictures, this one snuck in there.  This was what the little babe did while the rest of us ate cake.  I guess playing on stairs were enough of a treat for him.  Enjoy the "tag-along" photo.  And I hope your Tuesday was Tasty. :-)

Yum yum again. Your Grandma would put peanutbutter frosting on spice cake. I remember how good that tasted. Love, MOM
